Professional Pet Surgery With Expert Care

We know that the thought of your pet undergoing surgery can make even the calmest pet owner nervous. Whether it's a routine procedure or a complex, life-saving surgery, our experienced team ensures that your pet is in the most capable and caring hands.

General & Advanced Surgery

At Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, we understand that surgery can be stressful for both you and your pet. Our goal is to make your pet as comfortable as possible and to ease the anxiety you may be feeling. With extensive training and experience in a variety of surgical procedures, we ensure to keep you informed throughout the entire process. We will closely monitor your pet before, during, and after surgery, and provide clear details on the procedure, including risks, benefits, cost, and post-operative care.

Spay/Neuter Procedure

We strongly recommend spaying or neutering all dogs and cats to help reduce unwanted behaviors, sexual instincts, and the risk of infection and disease. This procedure is generally performed between 6-9 months of age, with each pet's individual needs carefully considered. Our veterinarians are highly trained in performing spay and neuter surgeries, ensuring your pet is safe, comfortable, and closely monitored throughout the procedure and recovery.

Neutering involves the removal of the testicles, helping to reduce aggressive behavior, prevent the urge to roam, and lower the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease. Before the surgery, we perform a physical exam and blood tests to ensure your pet’s safety under anesthesia. Recovery is typically uncomplicated with minimal aftercare.

Spaying involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus, eliminating heat cycles and the possibility of pregnancy. This procedure is also performed between 6-9 months of age. In addition to preventing heat and pregnancy, spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections and ovarian/uterine tumors, and can reduce the risk of malignant breast cancer by up to 90% when done before the first heat cycle. We will conduct a thorough physical exam and pre-operative lab work to ensure your pet’s safety during surgery and anesthesia. Recovery is usually smooth and uneventful.

Tumors & Growths

Tumors and growths are common in older pets, though they can develop at any age. While not all tumors or lumps are malignant, removal may still be beneficial. Each case is evaluated individually, taking into account factors such as your pet’s age, the potential for malignancy, as well as the size and location of the mass. Needle aspiration can sometimes provide an initial idea of what the mass might be, but in most cases, an excisional biopsy (mass removal) is recommended. This is the safest approach, as it allows the entire mass to be examined by a pathologist to determine if further action is needed after recovery.

Orthopedic Surgery

Paumanok Veterinary Hospital has access to in-house orthopedic specialists who perform surgeries to repair fractures, dislocations, cruciate ligament tears (ACL), and luxating patellas. Our orthopedic specialists also offer guidance when discussing conditions that may not be fully reversible, providing alternative options to improve comfort, mobility, and quality of life. Congenital diseases and acquired injuries to the bones, joints, and spine require more than just basic care. Symptoms of common and severe bone or joint issues include lameness, lethargy, withdrawal, difficulty jumping or climbing short distances, aggression, and irritability. Often, the only visible sign of pain or injury may be a change in your pet’s behavior.

We are skilled in using the latest bone plating, pinning, and fixation techniques to treat our patients. Paumanok Veterinary Hospital is equipped to perform orthopedic surgeries, including fracture and dislocation repairs, laceration repairs, cruciate ligament tear treatments, and luxating patella surgeries. In cases of severe, irreversible damage, we can perform partial or complete limb amputations.

All surgical and treatment options will be thoroughly discussed with you, including their advantages and disadvantages, to help you make the most informed decision for your pet’s health.

Soft Tissue Surgery

These surgical procedures vary in complexity, from simple mass removals to surgeries involving internal organs. Most soft tissue surgeries can be performed on-site in our fully equipped surgical suite. Regardless of the procedure, we are committed to providing you and your pet with the best care possible.
